In June 2006, after five long years of work, I finally announced the publication of my first book, Genesis of Man. I certainly did not expect that a mere 11 months later I would be launching a new updated version.

When I first began to write, back in 2001, I had no idea that this would eventually become a book, much less be published, so it was a truly wonderful feeling to finally open that package and cradle my own precious book for the very first time.

Sadly, with the advent of discounting and online retailers, it is becoming more and more difficult for new authors to secure a publishing deal. This is the main reason then why I eventually decided to self publish. Book shops typically purchase books at 40 percent discount, which they then take as their profit margin. They are perfectly entitled to do this, and obviously do need to make money themselves, but sadly for much of the time, this comes at both the publishers and authors expense, as it also means they earn less. Less money in the publishers coffers means less money for publishing new and unknown authors, until we get to the point where all that is published is memoirs from so called celebrities, and block buster novels by the few lucky best sellers. The sad fact is that is in today's climate less than one third of all books published makes any kind of profit at all, while one third break even, and one third actually lose money. Is it any wonder then that is so difficult for new and upcoming talent to secure a deal?

Even if you are one of the lucky ones, who manages to be offered and sign a publishing contract then there is still no guarantee that the book will ever see print. You will still though, in many cases be locked into a seven year contract, unable to take the book elsewhere. If do manage to see your name in print, then you will be lucky to receive a royalty of more than eight percent.

What then can the new and aspiring author do? The more I researched the market, the more I realised that the only thing I could do was self publish.  Eventually I settled on a small British publisher, Authors Online, who have been truly outstanding and an inspiration to work with. The contract was signed on April 21, 2006 and it was with great trepidation that I finally unwrapped my own sample copy on June 25, 2006. It was an incredible and indescribable feeling to finally hold my own book in my hands and know that I had created and given birth to this wonderful miracle, in what must surely have been the longest pregnancy in human history.

Two days later I departed for a three week holiday to Lundy, my favourite island retreat. The timing on the surface at least was lousy, but the holiday had been booked and paid for a year in advance, when I had little idea that my book would be published. Still, it gave me a much needed three rest weeks rest, and time to regather my strength and resources for this new phase in my life, time which in retrospect was very much needed.

My first batch of 50 books was delivered on my return, and the next few months passed in a blur of talks and other events. During the first 11 months I managed to sell a reasonable 100 or so copies, an average of around 3 copies a week. It is not exactly a best seller, but considerably better than the average print on demand book, which sells just 110 copies during its entire time in print.

One of the first things I did when the book went to print was to visualise myself standing in my local branch of Borders Books in Kingston upon Thames doing a talk and book signing. I am delighted to state then that in January 2007 I did just that. They did a wonderful display, and ordered 20 books, most of which have sold. Even better than this though is the fantastic news that my book has now been added to their stock system, which means it is now a listed title available through any Borders store. Who says then that dreams can't come true?

Shortly after publication, I engaged the services of a publicist, in the form of Paul, who works on behalf of Richard's (owner and editor of Authors OnLine) published authors. He showed the book to various influential people within the publishing industry, including major newspapers and large book stores. Almost without exception, they all stated that they loved the book, but did not like the original cover. It became clear then that if I wished to increase sales and be taken more seriously as a writer, then I would have to change the cover. What with a house move at the end of the 2006 and various other personal issues, it got put to one side until April 2007, when I commissioned Clifford White, an excellent and very experienced cover designer to do the work. He came up with three superb designs, and I was hard pushed to choose between them. I posted the three images on this website, and asked my readers to decide, and they all voted for the cover which you can see at the top of this page.

The new version then finally went to print on Wednesday May 16, 2007, a most auspicious day, since there was a new moon in Gemini, the sign of the zodiac that rules communication. I ordered my first batch of books 2 days later and they arrived in record time, on Tuesday May 22. I now then have to set to work selling and promoting them....

So, why should you the reader, buy this book? At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, I believe that this book is truly unique. Mind body and spirit and alternative history are two of the fastest growing areas in worldwide publishing, with lots of different books available, each telling a different aspect of the Genesis of Man story, each in their own unique style. There was and is definitely a need for one concise book that brings this information together in a chronological sequence in one easy to read volume, appealing to both esoteric and the more academic reader. Genesis of Man fulfils all these requirements, which is why I believe this book is truly unique. Don't take my word for it though, browse this site and judge for yourselves.
